Hodgson (1967) noted that: "Sanbô is an old Japanese fruit of unknown origin, first described in 1848, that is still popular and grown mainly in Wakayama Prefecture."
The Chiefland Budwood Facility (2010) provided the following notes on the cultivar (clone DPI-833-55): "Sanbokan Lemon was received from the USDA AF67-62 (7-55) in 1978. Not commercial, seedy, large fruit, cold hardy. Also known as Sweet lemon or Sanbokan grapefruit. Variety is grown in Japan. Origin: [Sal kate a] Old Japanese fruit, also called Sabo"
Crown compact or dense, not weeping. First-year twig surface glabrous; second- or third-year twig surface striate; thorns straight; prickles absent or not persistent. Petiole glabrous, length short; wings narrow, adjoining the blade. Leaflets one, margin entire (by misinterpretation) or bluntly toothed, shade leaflet blades weakly conduplicate, sun leaflet blades weakly or strongly conduplicate. Scent of crushed leaflets spicy or peppery. Fruit as broad as long or longer than broad; rind green-yellow (6), yellow (7-10), yellow-orange (11), or orange (12); rind texture medium rough (6-7) or rough (8); firmness leathery; navel absent; flesh orange or yellow; taste acidic-sweet.
Hodgson (1967) provided the following additional notes on the cultivar: "Fruit medium-sized and obovoid; collar or neck prominent; rind medium-thick, yellow, coarsely pebbled, somewhat bumpy, and easily removed, with tendency to re-green. Flesh moderately juicy and flavor good. Late maturity."
The Chiefland Budwood Facility (2010) provided the following additional notes on the cultivar (clone DPI-833-55): "Description: sweet lemon taste, coarse, bumpy peel, peels easy, herbicide sensitive to some herbicides. Season: Late"
