Yellow-spotted Stink Bug

Taxonomy

Erthesina fullo

Abbreviation: YSSB

Distribution

Yellow-spotted stink bug is primarily present in Asian countries. Recently, yellow-spotted stink bug specimens were detected in the United States as regulatory incidents and intercepted at ports of entry. All detections of yellow-spotted stink bug in the United States indicate the pest entered as a hitchhiker on pallets of materials or cargo.

Affected Commodities

Yellow-spotted stink bug can prey on over 43 host plant families such as citrus, chestnut, soybean, timber trees, and various stone fruit of economic importance.

Commodity Damage

Evidence of the adult female yellow-spotted stink bug is observed in eggs in masses on the underside of leaves. Both the nymphs and adults feed on the sap of young green bark, trunks, and leaves, in addition to the host fruit.

Yellow-spotted stink bug feeding can cause ripening fruit to rot and unripe fruit, flowers, and buds to drop prematurely from trees. Yellow-spotted stink bug can also cause branches to wilt and and the spotting or curling of leaves.

Port Inspections

CBP Agriculture Specialists, please refer to the manuals for general inspection guidelines.

Yellow-spotted stink bug has been only intercepted at U.S. ports of entry during the months of September through January, primarily found as hitchhikers on non-agricultural commodities such as furniture, tile, stone, glass, and machinery. USDA APHIS is requesting CBP to be cautious for potential interceptions of yellow-spotted stink bug when inspecting shipments imported from China, especially during the inspection target window of September through January.

Adult yellow-spotted stink bug specimens can range in size from 18–23 mm with a large shield-shaped blackish brown body containing yellow spots and markings. The adult abdomen underside is yellowish brown with numerous dark markings. Yellow-spotted stink bug nymphs can get up to 16 mm in length with a brownish gray body containing scattered red spots.
