This weevil is reported from Mexico (Baja California and Baja California Sur), though the full extent of its potential range is unknown.

Affected Commodities

This weevil is a pest of the following plants: found on members of the Lamiaceae family, particularly Ocimum (basil). The following are hosts where A. obliquus has been intercepted; however, its host range is unknown. 

  • basil
  • oregano
  • sage
  • mint
  • thyme
  • herbs

CBP Agriculture Specialists, please refer to manuals for general inspection guidelines. When performing inspections, look for the weevil on stems and leaves.

This weevil has been intercepted in shipments of Mexican herbs from September through February. Though commercial cargo appears to be the main risk pathway, passenger baggage may also be a significant pathway of concern.
