Key characters

  • setae c1 weakly spatulate; setae d1 with broad blunt tip; setae e1 minute, blunt (Figs. 1, 2, 3)
  • setae c1 > d1 > e1 in length (Fig. 3)
  • seta h1 longer than h2 (Fig. 4)
  • seta h2 spatulate (Fig. 4)
  • seta f2 more or less subequal in length to f3, or marginally shorter than f3 (Fig. 4)
  • coxae III-IV nude
  • femur II with 4 setae (d, l', bv", v')
  • genua I-II with 2 setae (d, l' present; l" absent)
  • tarsi I-II with companion seta obviously shorter than solenidion (Figs. 5, 6)
  • dorsal seta on tibiae I-II setiform with tapered tip (but not finely tapered) (Figs. 5, 6)
  • palp tibiotarsus with one solenidion and one blunt eupathidium distally (Figs. 7, 8), and one seta dorsally
  • palps distinctly elongate (Figs. 8, 9)
  • setae ps1 and ps2 inserted adjacent to each other (Fig. 10)
  • male with long ps1 setae, 19-22 microns (Fig. 11)
  • male femur II and genua I-II same as female
  • larva unknown

Similar species

Raoiella species 13 is similar morphologically to Raoiella species 5.

Raoiella species 13: opisthosomal setae f2 subequal in length with f3.

Raoiella species 5: opisthosomal setae f2 shorter than f3.

Swamp Box, Lophostemon suaveolens (Myrtaceae)

Remarks

This species is currently being described by Beard et al.

Listed as Raoiella australica in Dowling et al. (2012); listed as undescribed species of Raoiella in Ochoa et al. (2011); listed as Raoiella nr australica in Beard et al. (2012).

A new predatory thrips, Scolothrips ochoa, was found feeding on this species, and was described by Mound et al. (2010).
