Leaf division

Leaves may be simple, or divided into leaflets (compound). Note that a leaf may be very deeply lobed to the midrib, yet not compound (see the feature Leaf dissection). Generally, in compound leaves, leaflets have their own individual stalks (petiolules), in addition to the leaf's petiole. To distinguish between a branch with simple leaves and a compound leaf, find the leaf's axillary bud, which is usually in the leaf axil, but is never found in the leaflet axils.

simple

Simple leaves are not divided into leaflets. They may be undissected to deeply lobed.

compound

Compound leaves may be pinnately compound (top two) or palmately compound (bottom two). Additionally, compound leaves may be bicompound (see below) or tricompound.
