Origin

Southeast Europe, east Asia.

Brief characterization

Woody stems bearing opposite, simple or compound leaves and pyramidal, obpyramidal, or conical panicles of small, ca. 1.5 cm long, waxy, sometimes fragrant flowers; calyx irregularly lobed, insignificant; corolla narrowly funnelform or salverform, with 4 lobes shorter than tube; stamens 2; both style and stamens included in corolla tube.

Cultivar and/or species variation

Panicles mostly 10-20 cm long, possibly longer; flowers single or double and mostly purple to white; corolla lobes on Syringa vulgaris are concave.
