Origin

Tropical and subtropical; southern U.S. to South America.

Brief characterization

Leaves ovate or lanceolate to oblong; 4-merous flowers in terminal or axillary cymes or corymbs; calyx tube prominently lobed; funnelform to salverform corolla with lobes short relative to tube length.

Cultivar and/or species variation

Flowers to 9 cm long, mostly white, pink, red, or bicolor with tube and lobes contrasting; calyx lobes linear to elliptic or lanceolate, erect to spreading, with teeth in between; corolla lobes rounded to acute, erect to spreading; cultivars single and double.
