Type Species


Odontota crenata Blanchard.



Probaenia can be distinguished by the following combination of characters:

  • the lateral margins of the pronotum and the elytra without long, stiff spines
  • the head without a frontal horn, vertex with 3 to 5 sulci
  • the pronotum with a seta in each anterior angle, with a basal impression
  • the apex of the elytra without a tooth-like projection
  • the elytra with 10 rows of punctures for entire length and 4 regular costae, without tubercles, costae 1 and 4 unite near apex
  • the antennae thickened at apex, but not clavate, long, with 8-antennomeres
  • the prosternum does not expand anteriorly to partly cover the mouth
  • profemur with 1 to 3 teeth



Body elongate, rectangular.

Head: eye not prominent; clypeus triangular, smooth, edges margined, medial carina present.

Antenna: with 8‑antennomeres.

Pronotum: trapezoidal, at base as wide as or slightly narrower than elytra, strongly narrowed behind anterior margin, conical.

Elytron: apical and lateral margins dentate; flat triangular lamina present in exterior apical angle; with 10 rows of punctures plus scutellar row; 4 costae; costae 3 and 4 united at apex.

Leg: profemur with 1 to 3 teeth on inner margin.
