Type Species


Bruchia sparsa Weise.



Bruchia can be distinguished by the following combination of characters:

  • the lateral margins of the pronotum and the elytra without long, stiff spines
  • the head without a frontal horn
  • the pronotum with a seta in each anterior angle
  • the apex of the elytra without a tooth-like projection
  • the elytra with 8 rows of punctures for entire length and 2 interrupted costae
  • the antennae thickened at apex, with 7-antennomeres, short to very short, clavate
  • the prosternum does not expand anteriorly to partly cover the mouth



Head: medial sulcus present.

Antenna: with 7‑antennomeres; antennomeres 1 to 5 very sharp, gradually widening after 3, apical two antennomeres less separated; 1 to 3 short, transverse; 4 to 5 very short, strongly transverse; 6 as long and wider than preceding two combined, as wide as 7; 7 subovate, pointed at apex.

Pronotum: narrow, width at base and apex equal; lateral margin deflexed, nearly parallel-sided; disc convex, regularly punctate; medial line finely impressed.

Scutellum: small, quadrate.

Elytron: 3x as long as pronotum, slightly convex; apex conjointly rounded; with 8 rows of punctures; lightly bicostate, costae interrupted, transversely united before apex.
