Type Species

 

Coelaenomenodera sculptilis Fairmaire.

Diagnosis

 

Balyana (Balyana) can be distinguished by the following combination of characters:

  • lateral margin of pronotum and elytra without long, stiff spines
  • head without frontal horn between antennae
  • pronotum with seta in each angle, flattened, never constricted basally, lateral margin narrowly margined, with triangular projection over head, with or without pits or fossae
  • anterior margin of prosternum not projecting forward, not partly covering mouth
  • less than 14 mm in length
  • antennae with 7- or 8-antennomeres, without sensory pits on lower surface
  • elytra with distinct longitudinal and transverse carinae forming an irregular net-like sculpture

Description

 

Elongate; parallel-sided; convex; elytra at base wider than pronotum; color yellowish to black; 7.0-9.5 mm in length.

Head: vertex punctate; with 2 transverse sulci above antennal insertions; tubercles absent at base of antennae; clypeus pubescent, emarginate; labrum short, curved, pubescent.

Antenna: short; rigid; with 7- or 8-antennomeres; apical antennnomere slightly longer than preceding 2 combined, punctate.

Pronotum: lateral margin emarginate at base, sinuate; anterior margin with a triangular projection over head; anterior and posterior angles acute; surface with depressions medially and laterally.

Scutellum: triangular; punctate.

Elytron: lateral margin straight, narrowly margined; exterior apical angle rounded; humerus rounded, not produced; with 10 rows of punctures interrupted by longitudinal and transverse carinae forming an irregular net-like sculpture.

Leg: tibia dilated apically, with small tooth near apex.

Distribution

 

Ethiopia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zimbabwe.
